Outreach, Communication and Education
The GAP-M project had a diverse media exposure including TV interviews, newspaper articles, radio interviews, participation at forums of policy-makers and industry, and events related to the promotion of science.

Our Spider Mite Annual Meetings were covered in international media, including Spanish national newspaper El Mundo, Montenegrian newspaper Vijesti, as well as national TV of Montenegro. Several TV interviews followed our participation on EU manifestation: Festival of Science, aimed at the popularization of science. In addition, report on the Montenegrian national TV on agriculture, included a report dedicated to the genomics in agriculture with an interview on GAP-M project. Finally, since our genome project was initially funded by US Department of Energy, we were invited to present a talk on “Role of biotechnology in discovery of novel sources of energy” at the Milocer Development Forum, an international conference of policy makers, politicians and economists in Montenegro.

Record of Performance in Service: (preceding three academic years, to include the following as applicable).

2010-2011
From 2006 I am coordinator and leader of the spider mite genome sequencing consortium. As can be seen from the Nature paper (in press) this includes scientific and administrative coordination of more than 50 people. This paper of six pages in the Nature also contains a supplement of more than 150 pages of additional analyses and data illustrating the complexity and level of coordination necessary for accomplishing this effort. For this reason I am both corresponding and the first author on this work. To accomplish this I am organizing: 1 group meeting/year (with whole group including teams from Canada, USA, Chile, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland and France), two Scientific Advisory board meetings ( SAB )/ year, and weekly conferences with individual team members. My duties also include advising postdoctoral fellows and graduate students in our team. My activities also include creating future goals and project development and leading the grant applications. Besides this I am responsible for quarterly reporting to granting agencies (Genome Canada and GL2). I am also leading development of patents and meetings with industry related to patent development (see patents filed and several others in process of development). As such I carry a disproportionately heavy research and service load.

2009-2010
My current service obligations are related to management of the GC and GL2 grants. This represents coordination of an international consortium of 20 independent groups. As part of this requirement I hold numerous meetings and prepare reports. In addition to regular weekly meetings with research collaborators (2 each week), and several commercialization meetings (total 5), I have organized following formal meetings that are related to this work:

• The fourth spider mite genomics meeting, Ciudad Rodrigo, Castilla la Mancha, Spain, 20-22 September 2010.
• The third spider mite genomics meeting, Tarragona, Catalunya, Spain, 20-22 September 2010.
• The second spider mite genomics meeting, Tivat, Montenegro, 20-22 September 2010.
• The Genomics Workshop: “Genomics in sustainable agriculture”, University of Western Ontario, London, March 30, 2010.
• The first spider mite genomics meeting, Logrono, La Rioja, Spain, 15-19 October, 2009.
• 1st GAP-M Scientific Advisory Board Meeting, Madrid, Spain, March 2, 2010.
• 2nd GAP-M Scientific Advisory Board Meeting, Logrono, La Rioja, November 23, 2010.
• 3nd GAP-M Scientific Advisory Board Meeting, Cadaques, Catalunya, February, 2011.
