Contributions to the Training of Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP)
Graduate and undergraduate students, and more recently postdoctoral fellows and permanent research personnel such as Research Associates and Technicians, form the basis of my research group and HQP training. Since joining Western in 1998, I have (co)-supervised numerous undergraduate students as summer/co-op students, honours research project students and volunteers. After their time in my lab, majority have gone on to graduate and medical schools, or other science related work. The main aim I strive for when working with undergraduate students is to foster their independent and critical thinking, and to empower them with conceptual understanding of the science in which they take part. Out of the nine graduate students who have completed their studies under my supervision (7 MSc, 4 PhD), all hold positions related to their training. Three MSc students have pursued their PhD studies (Yeo (Univ of Cambridge, UK), Mihajlovic (Univ. of Guelph), Poduska (McMasters), while four are working in industry positions: Ens (Cytotechnologist, CML Healthcare Clinical Laboratories, Mississauga); Fung (Client Partner, Brunel Life Sciences, Toronto); Fu (Breeder, Monsanto, Guelph) and Ivanov (Technician, Western University, London). Of my three PhD graduates, one holds a faculty position (Sajja, Assistant Professor, Dr.B.R.Ambedkar University, Srikakulam), and two pursued postdoctoral positions (Jali (Univ of Madison, USA) and Rosloski (Western)). Working with graduate students, I strive to instill independence and project ownership in them. They are expected to write the first draft of articles we co-author, attend conferences and actively participate in discussions whether these are internal lab meetings, meetings with collaborators or professional meetings. Their successful integration in subsequent positions are evident of their scientific growth. In addition to students, I have supervised five PDFs who have completed their postdoctoral studies. Acevedo is now a Research Professor at the Univ. of Guadalajara, Mexico; Wang is a Research Manager at UCLA, USA; Navarro and Cazaux are Scientific Managers at a biotechnology company (Laboratoire ID, France); and Fatima is a Research Associate in the Dept of Physiology & Pharmacology at Western. When training PDFs, I strive to further their scientific development, and to engage them in activities such as grant writing, student supervision, leadership building, and developing professional contacts in the field. Apart from trainees, more recently I have also supervised full-time staff members (Research Associate, Technician and Project Manager) within a research environment. When managing staff, I aim to contribute to their career advancement by assisting them to achieve their own career goals, facilitating their development of skills to grow within their positions and support them in furthering their knowledge through additional training and external courses. I treat all of my trainees and employees as future colleagues and collaborators with hope that they result as such.

Refereed articles for following journals (last 3 years):
The Plant Cell, PNAS, The Plant Journal, Plant Physiology, Plant Molecular Biology, Botany, Physiologia Plantarum, Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Mechanisms of Development

Refereed grant proposals for following agencies (last 3 years):
Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Canada; United States Department of Agriculture, USA; Department of Energy, USA; National Science Foundation, USA; The Biotechnology and Biological Science Research Council, UK.
