UDG Before You Arrive: Preparing International Students for Montenegro
For an international student, studying abroad is not only about choosing a university. It is also about discovering a new country, understanding its culture and gradually turning an unfamiliar place into a new home.
At UDG, we believe that this experience should not be limited to the classroom or the university campus.
That is why the beginning of the 2025/2026 academic year brought together both domestic and international students in a very special place. As part of the activities welcoming the new generation of UDG students, one of their first classes was held at Lovćen, one of Montenegro’s most recognizable places and an important part of its cultural and historical identity.
For international students, it was also an opportunity to experience Montenegro beyond Podgorica from the very beginning of their studies.
But Lovćen is only the beginning.
Throughout their time at UDG, international students have opportunities to discover different parts of Montenegro, participate in university activities, meet local students and become part of the wider UDG community. The goal is not for students coming from abroad to experience Montenegro only as the country in which their university happens to be located, but to understand the environment, people and culture that surround their academic experience.
This approach is particularly important within UDG’s wider internationalization efforts. The University’s strategy recognizes familiarization with Montenegro, its culture and language, as well as integration with domestic students, as important elements of the international student experience.
The ME Study in English project further strengthens this idea. Making UDG more international is not only about providing information or academic opportunities in English. It is also about creating an environment in which students arriving from another country can participate fully in university life while getting to know the country they have chosen for their studies.
Because sometimes the first lesson at a university is not held in a classroom.
Sometimes, it begins on Lovćen.
